Lesotho is an economic and geographic captive of South Africa. Political developments in Lesotho since independence have been a major source of instability with negative consequences on economic and human development. Lesotho has a high tourism potential. It emanates from the country’s picturesque landscape and snow-covered mountain slopes during winter, which is ideal for camping and skiing activities. This is complemented by the country’s proximity to South Africa, which has an extensive network of tour operators.

VISA CATEGORIES

Entry visa

Issued for tourism, business, to visit family and friends and for medical treatment
Granted for a maximum period of 30 consecutive days
Single-entry visa
Only certain nationalities are eligible

Entry-visas are issued to foreign nationals who would like to sojourn in Lesotho for tourism or business purposes, to visit family and friends or to receive medical treatment. This visa is granted for a period not exceeding 90 days dependent on nationalities.

Short-term Assignment Authorization

Issued for temporarily conducting any business, trade or profession
Issued for emergency work activities
Granted for up to 90 days
May be extended in-country

The permission from the Labour Commissioner is required to conduct work activities in Lesotho for a few days. The validity of this authorization depends on the Labour Commissioner and on the project to be conducted, however, it is generally granted for 90 days. The processing time of the short-term assignment authorization can take up to 10 days.

Long-term work permit

Required prior to entering Lesotho

A long-term work permit is issued to a foreign worker that wishes to take employment in Lesotho for up to 2 years. The validity period of the permit is subject to the discretion of the Director of the Department of Immigration Services. Work permits are renewable provided the employee’s local contract of employment is valid and ongoing.

Dependent Permit

Issued to a person whose spouse, parent, or guardian is can lawfully enter Lesotho
Valid for up to 2 years
Work is prohibited

A dependent permit is issued to a spouse, parent or guardian of a foreign national who is lawfully allowed to enter for work purposes or other purposes. The validity of the dependent permit is granted at the discretion of the immigration officer and is often tied to the validity of the main applicant’s permit.

Student/Internship Permit

Allows you to study, research, or take part in an internship in Lesotho
Validity dependant on duration of studies or internship

A student’s permit or internship pass is issued to foreign nationals who wish to pursue their education in one of Lesotho’s education or training institutions, or those who wish to undertake an internship or take part in academic research at an accredited institution in Lesotho. The validity of the student or internship permit is dependent on the duration of studies, the duration of the internship, or research assignment.
